How to Open a Herbalife Nutrition Club in the U.S. – 2026 Requirements

Customers enjoying shakes in a modern nutrition club

Thinking about opening a Herbalife Nutrition Club in the United States? A Nutrition Club can create a physical place where customers can enjoy prepared shakes and other Herbalife products, receive support, and connect with a local wellness community. Before choosing a location, it helps to understand what a Nutrition Club is, how the setup process works, and which requirements apply to your situation.

Key point: Opening a Nutrition Club involves more than finding a storefront. The process typically includes Herbalife training, a business plan, Club registration, and checking local business, zoning and health requirements before making a financial commitment.

What Is a Herbalife Nutrition Club?

Herbalife describes Nutrition Clubs as community-based wellness spaces independently owned and operated by Herbalife Independent Distributors. Depending on the Club, customers may be able to purchase individually prepared Herbalife products such as protein shakes, teas and aloe drinks, receive product guidance, participate in wellness activities, and connect with others pursuing healthier lifestyles.

Nutrition Clubs are not owned or operated by Herbalife. Each Club is an independent Distributor business and must follow applicable Herbalife rules as well as applicable local laws and regulations.

What Does It Take to Open a Nutrition Club?

Before focusing on a specific property, it is useful to think of the process in several parts: confirming your eligibility, completing Herbalife’s required Commercial Location training, preparing a realistic business plan, registering the Club, and checking the requirements that apply in the city and state where you plan to operate.

A commercial location adds responsibilities and expenses that do not exist when beginning an Herbalife business from home or primarily through direct customer relationships. That is why planning the operating costs, expected customer activity, location, permits and other commitments should come before signing a lease or investing in renovations.

Planning a Nutrition Club: A Practical Checklist

  1. Confirm your Distributor status and eligibility.
  2. Decide what type of location you are considering: a new lease or purchase, a property you already own, a location you previously leased for another purpose, or a genuine no-lease arrangement.
  3. Complete the required Herbalife Commercial Location training.
  4. Prepare a realistic business plan covering startup costs, monthly expenses and expected customer activity.
  5. Confirm local licensing, zoning and health requirements.
  6. Register the Club with Herbalife and submit any required declaration or documentation.
  7. Only then make the appropriate property commitment when the standard lease, sublease or purchase rules apply.

Local Business and Health Requirements Still Apply

Herbalife registration is only one part of opening a physical business. State, county and city requirements can vary considerably. Depending on the location and operating model, additional requirements may include business licensing, zoning, food-service or food-handling requirements, health-department rules, insurance and other local approvals.

Anyone considering a Nutrition Club should check the requirements for the specific city and state before signing a lease, investing in renovations or beginning operations.

The 12-Month Rule: When Does It Apply?

In many commercial-location situations, Herbalife requires the Distributor to have been an Independent Distributor for at least 12 consecutive months — but this does not apply in exactly the same way to every property arrangement.

Herbalife’s U.S. Commercial Club guidance states that before a Distributor enters into a lease, sublease or purchase agreement for a physical location to operate an Herbalife-related business, the Distributor must:

  • Have been an Herbalife Independent Distributor for at least 12 consecutive months.
  • Successfully complete the required Keys to Your Business: Commercial Location training.
  • Prepare a business plan using Herbalife’s interactive business-plan process and make it available to Herbalife upon request.
  • Register the Nutrition Club with Herbalife.

Herbalife’s public U.S. FAQ summarizes the same core requirements before signing a lease: 12 consecutive months as a Distributor, required training and completion of a business plan.

Important Exception: What If You Already Own the Property?

This is an important distinction for someone who already has access to a suitable location.

Herbalife’s Commercial Club No Lease Declaration recognizes situations in which a Distributor is not making a new purchase or entering into a new lease or sublease for the location where the Club will operate.

The declaration includes, among other situations:

  • A property the Distributor previously purchased for a non-Herbalife-related purpose.
  • A property for which the Distributor previously entered into a lease for purposes unrelated to an Herbalife business.
  • A location the owner or landlord allows the Distributor to use without a lease or financial obligation, subject to the conditions in Herbalife’s declaration.

For Commercial Clubs that qualify for this No Lease route, Herbalife’s published requirements do not list the 12-month Distributor waiting period. Instead, the Distributor is required to complete the Commercial Location training, prepare the business plan, submit the applicable declaration and register the Club.

Important distinction: Already owning a property is not the same as purchasing a property now specifically to open a Nutrition Club. If a Distributor is entering into a new purchase agreement for the Herbalife business, the standard Commercial Club requirements — including the 12 consecutive months — apply.

The No Lease Declaration also states that Herbalife may request proof of ownership or proof of the property’s previous use. If the arrangement involves a landlord, additional owner or landlord documentation may also be required.

What If the Location Is Rent-Free?

A rent-free arrangement does not automatically mean that the No Lease rules apply.

If the Distributor has a financial obligation in exchange for the right to occupy the space — for example, landlord-mandated improvements — the arrangement may still fall under the rules for a lease, sublease or purchase agreement. Where an owner allows the Distributor to operate without a lease and without a financial obligation, the No Lease process may apply. The required training, business plan, declaration and Club registration still need to be completed.

Do Not Sign a Lease First and Ask Questions Later

For a Distributor planning to rent, sublease or purchase a location specifically for an Herbalife business, timing matters. The applicable Commercial Location requirements should be completed before entering into the agreement.

Prospective Club operators should therefore verify their eligibility and complete the required Herbalife steps before committing financially to a location.

Special Note for Distributors Registered Outside the United States

International Distributors should verify their eligibility before planning a U.S. Nutrition Club.

Herbalife’s current U.S. Sales & Marketing Plan states that non-U.S./U.S. Territory Distributors can currently place Customer Direct orders in the United States, but they are not able to submit Retail or Nutrition Club receipts.

This can materially affect the operation of a conventional U.S. Nutrition Club. A Distributor whose Herbalife distributorship is registered outside the United States should therefore confirm the current rules directly with Herbalife before committing to a U.S. location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a brand-new Herbalife Distributor open a Nutrition Club?

If opening the Club requires entering into a new lease, sublease or property purchase for the Herbalife business, Herbalife requires at least 12 consecutive months as a Distributor, along with the required training, business plan and Club registration. A qualifying No Lease situation may be treated differently.

If I already own a commercial property, do I still have to wait 12 months?

Herbalife’s No Lease Declaration includes a situation in which the Distributor previously purchased the property for a non-Herbalife-related purpose. In that route, the published No Lease requirements do not list the 12-month waiting period. Proof of ownership or previous use may be requested, and the other Commercial Club requirements still apply.

Can I buy a property now and avoid the 12-month rule?

No. Herbalife’s standard rule applies before entering into a purchase agreement for a physical location to operate an Herbalife-related business. The exception relates to qualifying existing arrangements, such as a property previously purchased for a non-Herbalife purpose.

Does a free location automatically qualify as No Lease?

Not necessarily. The nature of the arrangement matters. If there is a financial obligation in exchange for the right to occupy the property, the standard Commercial Club rules may apply. Herbalife’s No Lease Declaration should be reviewed carefully.

Do local permits still apply?

Yes. Herbalife’s internal requirements do not replace applicable state, county or city laws, licensing, zoning, health or food-service requirements.

Interested in Building an Herbalife Business?

A Nutrition Club can be one way to develop a local customer community, but it is not necessary to start with a physical location. Many Distributors begin by learning the products, developing customers and gaining business experience before deciding whether a commercial location makes sense.
